Under the influence (A study on the Spirit-filled life)
Launch
Soon before Jesus left for heaven, He promised us someone else who would come in His place. In fact, He said that it is to our advantage (John 16:7) that He had to go, otherwise we wouldn’t be sent this other Someone. Jesus called Him our Helper, the Spirit of truth.
This study will explore the importance of the work of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life.
Key text: 1 Cor12:13, Rom 8:9, Ephesians 5:17-21
Other texts: Ephesians 1:13-14, 4:30, Col 3:16-17, John 16: 4-15, Galatians 5:15-25
Explore
1. Read Eph 1:13-14, 4:30,
i. What symbol is given for the Holy Spirit?
ii. According to the Scriptures above, what is our confidence that Christ will redeem us on His coming day?
2. The analogy in Eph 5:17-21 contrasts the resulting actions of what is at work within us. What are the differences between being drunk with wine and being filled with the Spirit? (Look up the meaning of ‘debauchery’)
3. Read Colossians 3:16-17. What are the results of the command to let the word of Christ dwell richly in us? How do they compare to the results of being filled with the Spirit from Ephesians 5 above?
4. The Spirit leads us in the truth of God’s word. Notice Jesus’ teaching in John 17:17 and 16:13. How does this correspond to Col 3:16?
5. The Scripture commands us to be filled, (present continuous tense) with the Spirit. Read Galatians 5:16-25. What things will be evident in our lives as we continually allow the Holy Spirit to lead us?
i. What challenges do you face when seeking to obey the Spirit?
ii. What does God say we have to help us obey Him? Read Philippians 2:13 and Hebrews 10:24-25
Christ is continuously transforming us to His image, through the Holy Spirit (2Cor 3:18). This is called sanctification, and is a work of the Spirit which He will faithfully complete (Phil1:6, Heb10:14) and that requires our obedience.
Can we live the Christian life by our own strength? Take time to thank Jesus for graciously sending us the Holy Spirit to help us follow Him.
