The tweet experience (Aug/Sep)

The tweet experience
We branded the mission to Kabarak University ‘a tweet experience’.  This was simply a way to point the students to ‘follow and be followed’.

Below are shortened journal excerpts of my experiences for the 7 days of God's faithfulness.

Monday:
Arrived at 9.30p.m to find the Kabarak team doing a jam/praise & worship session. Joined in and got introduced to the rest of the team.
The mess/cafeteria was already closed. Some student shared his soda and biscuits with us, for dinner. Strengthened by the grace :)

Day 1: (Tuesday)
The morning devotion about who Christ is (Collosians 1). Twas ‘just enlightening’, as Kevin, the CU chairman, confessed after the devotion. Was amazed with them as we studied together. Praise God.

- Later invited a few 1st years for interactive group sessions. All the 4 in my group were not born again (One is a Muslim). Shared the gospel. None was drawn to Christ.

Afternoon: Watched the ‘Setting your vision for college’ from the CollegeReady DVD This was to model for the CU leaders/volunteers how to lead discussions, in preparation for the screening of the same clip that night
with Sheila, Katolon and Charles, some of the volunteers in the team. Katolon wore suits all through my stay there!

Nightime: It was nice to see the CU volunteers each leading teams of about 20 1st years.  Leadership development. Really tired as I went to bed.

Day 2: (Wednesday)
We studied the meaning of salvation (Key passage: Romans 3)
Lucy and Sheila, some of the volunteers, say this changed their perspective of Christianity. Soli Deo Gloria.

Went for the official Kabarak chapel service. The preacher announced Life Ministry and our whole-week program. He praised the previous night’s DVD which he’d attended & asked the whole school to join us. Twas great to sing with the P&W team. Huge chapel!

We watched and shared from Empowering Friendships clip, in preprataion to do the same during the night sessions, as on the previous night.

Day 3: Thursday
Sung praises & worship all morning for our devotion. Sharing needs and praying about them.

After breakfast, Elisha (one of the 2 student missionary I traveled with) shared on ‘The call to make disciples. His talk ended up emphasizing more on the need to be a disciple, which was our theme anyway, so no worries, more thanks.

In the afternoon, I led the session on Dating right. A somber ending, with lots of self-reflection, confessions and personal prayers at the end.

The CU service at night was good. A 2nd year student preached. Over the presentations, Lucy, one of our team members sung ‘In Christ alone’ and shared how her life had been changed in the last 2 weeks.

Day 4: Friday
Devotion : A tweeting lifestyle. (Topic: How then shall we live?) Verses studied: Philipians 3, 1 Thess4; 1-12, I John 3.

Mid morning: Vyonne (the other student missionary) shared on assurance of salvation. We had to review the Salvation statement in Romans 3:23-24, as many related questions arose concerning ‘backsliding’.

Vyonne (in brown) with Mercy Masika, one of our guest musicians for the night.
Afternoon: Planning and preparation for  ‘The amazing G-Race’, the main team building activity for Saturday. Prayed it doesn’t rain again like it had been all day, all week. You need sunshine for great outdoor team-building acts.

Night: The mini concert.
Mercy Masika, Enid Moraa (of the ‘Wewe ni Bwana juu ya mabwana’ fame) Charles Muiruri and a guy named Chris, who stirred the masses with his ‘Yesu pap, Yesu mara hiyo hiyo’ hit.

Day 5: Saturday
Devotion: Prayer, and singing to the Lord. Planned for the Amazing GRace over breakfast.

One of the members shared with me they broken up that morning after convictions from the previous day’s sharing from the Dating right collegeready DVD. Didn’t know what to say :)

It didn’t rain. We enjoyed the Amazing GRace. Twas fun to see 1st years run around the huge school looking for clues based on the gospel. The clue for ‘Christ died for our sins’ was hidden in the Butchery! We wrapped it up with a presentation of the gospel, an alter call and prizes.

In the late afterenoon, we went for nyamachoma in a nearby village (‘Kambi ya moto’). Was fun to bond with the guys, have fun &laugh.

Cannibals!: Eating Nyama choma as we celebrated the week.
Night: Movie to the school. ‘Fireproof’. Everyone was exhausted from the day’s work.

Day 6: Sunday
Only 5 made it to breakfast! Guys were exhausted.
We went for service, where former president Moi was in attendance. We had lunch together, packed and left at around 3p.m.. An emotional farewell lunch.
